Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the future of the Star Wars franchise.

That's a bit weird considering it's actually set 30+ years before the events of The Force Awakens, but it represents just how seriously Disney is taking this entire cinematic universe. They don't care only about the chronological future of the series, which we will next see in 2017's Episode VIII. They want to expand in every direction possible, which is why Rogue One is the first ever live-action Star Wars spin-off movie.

Set prior to the events of A New Hope, this new movie directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Monsters), Rogue One tells the story of the rebel alliance's theft of the engineering plans to the first Death Star. It may seem a bit redundant to make an entire movie where the audience knows the end game (sorry, Death Star, you're going to go boom), but as you can tell from this first trailer, the operation to pull it all off can be still be incredibly thrilling even if you know how it ultimately ends up.

The big question now is…. will we see Darth Vader, or Boba Fett, or any of the other iconic Star Wars characters who were floating around the galaxy during this time period. We do get a glimpse of what looks like the Emperor's chamber and you can tell Vader's presence is looming over the entire trailer, so we bet this is just a tease and there a plenty more surprises heading our way.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16, 2016.
