With the new year just around the corner, the number guys are starting to crunch everything that happened in 2015 (worry not, they left it to us to recap the year’s best red carpet dresses and royal style moments). The folks at Google just revealed the top 10 fashion questions that had the Web puzzled, and since we wouldn’t dare leave you guys without answers, we quizzed the team for advice and intel. Without further ado, everything the Internet wanted to know about fashion, answered all in one place.
1. How to walk in heels
“Advice abounds on this topic, including inventive ways to pad your shoes and advice to start taking yoga classes. First and foremost, though, it’s about finding heels that won’t ache the minute you put them on—no one can walk easily in those. Before you buy another pair of high heels online, study my all-time favorite trick.” —Leah Melby Clinton, senior online fashion writer
2. What to wear on the first day of school
“For any kind of big day, you want to put your best foot—and outfit—forward while still feeling comfortable. There’s nothing worse than feeling self-conscious and fidgeting with your shirt all day. To find your perfect outfit, think of which items of clothing you like to wear most on your down time and make them more exciting with accessories. Love jeans? Try them with an of-the-moment square-toe boot and chain bag. Like a classic tee? Style it with the season’s micro-pleated skirts and midi-heels.” —Lauren Chan, associate fashion writer
3. How to fray jeans
“Frayed, raw hems were so popular this year and DIY’ing them is marvelously easy. Cut the ends off a hemmed pair exactly where you want them to hit: put them on, remain standing straight, and have a pal mark the right crop with a marker. Cut when the jeans are off your body and live in them, letting them fray more as you wear and wash. If longer white strings start to tickle your ankles after a few washes, trim them as desired.” —LMC
4. How to tie a shirt
“Turning a regular old T-shirt into a cool, cropped one is easiest if you start with a slightly longer, stretchy shirt—thick shirts can be stiff and therefore less pliable, making them super annoying to tie. Once you’ve got the right shirt, put it on. Determine where you want the shirt to hit, then grab a small fist-full of fabric at least three inches long in each hand. Tie them together like you would anything else, by knotting the two pieces through each other. I like this method because its easier than trying to knot one huge loop of fabric over itself, and it looks less bulky!” —Christina Perez, contributing fashion writer
5. What should a bride wear to the rehearsal dinner
“The bride has license to go over-the-top the night before her wedding. Even if your rehearsal dinner is a clam bake on the beach or a bonfire, pick something extra festive. A cocktail dress is always a safe bet; look for a white one if you want to keep it bridal. And bonus points for bling.” —Kim Fusaro, lead writer, weddings and home
6. What to wear booties with
“Is this a trick question? You can legit wear anything with booties. Pull them over black tights, on bare legs, or with skinny jeans. For outfit inspiration, we’ve got over 20 ways to wear them from date night to weekend errands.” —LMC
7. What are mules shoes
“They’re always open-back and can be heeled or flat. Mules are typically close-toed, but can also be peep- or open-toe. When they first grabbed our attention in the spring, it was all about heels. Now we’re really loving flat iterations.” —LMC
8. What to wear to a wedding in the woods
“Rule 1—flats. You’ll just look silly teetering down a dirt path in heels. Rule 2—a dress that’s flowy but not floor-length. A wedding like this is laid-back, so leave your body-con dresses in the closet. Same goes for your long dresses, which would get filthy on a grass ‘dance floor.'” —KF
9. How to dress up like [YouTube star] Miranda Sings
“Get the brightest red pants you can find and a striped button-down shirt, preferably in blue and white stripes. As for how to score her beauty look, don’t forget to pull your hair back on either side with bobby pins. Generously apply red lipstick.” – Anna Moeslein, entertainment editor
10. What color shoes goes with a black-and-blue dress
“If black and navy, I’d suggest black or a nude as the best bet. If a vivid cobalt, I think this is a good opportunity to have fun with a printed or bright shoe.” —LMC
Wondering who that gorgeous gal in the black and blue is? It’s British actress Annabelle Wallis. She’s Chris Martin’s new main squeeze and has major fashion cred.
