There aren't very many major characters in the first Blade Runner. You've got Harrison Ford as the Replicant hunter, Deckard, and then a small handful of people, most of whom don't survive the movie very long. As massive as Ridley Scott's movie is in its scope, it's actually a rather small story. If the cast list for Blade Runner 2 is any indication, however, things are definitely going to be bigger this time around.
Jared Leto is the latest to join, which brings us to a running list that includes Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hooks, Carla Juri, Mackenzie Davis, Barkhad Abdi, David Dastmalchian, Hiam Abbass, Lennie James and Dave Bautista. Granted we don't know how big of a role any of these actors – including Ford – will play in the movie, but these aren't exactly benchwarmer players.
Truth be told, we still don't know a whole lot about its premise. The only real, confirmed plot point is that Ford will be reprising his role as Deckard. Oh, and that the abandoned opening of the original movie could be the opening of the new one. Watch the storyboard for that below.
Don't let the mystery behind the project bother you too much, though. The level of talent involved with this thing is getting kind of absurd. Not only do you have that impressive cast list (people like Carla Juri and Mackenzie Davis may not be household names yet, but they are fantastic actors waiting to blow up), but Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Arrival) is directing from a script written by original Blade Runner writer Hampton Francher along with Michael Green. Plus, Roger Deakins is the cinematographer bringing it all together. Between the lot of them, there's bound to be something special about this movie. At the very least, it should stand out more than most sequels made decades after the original.
