Meet the Woman Responsible for Katy Perry's New Look
If you saw Katy Perry on the Golden Globes red carpet last night and thought that she looked amazing, but a little bit different than usual, you’re on to something. The pop star worked with celebrity stylist Leslie Fremar to pick the low-cut Prada column gown, and it was definitely a sophisticated departure from her norm (which we love, but was rarely understated).

“What I do is simple and pared-down. It’s thoughtful but it’s not eccentric,” the stylist told People. “I think she was just looking to do something different. And when I thought about what would be different for her it was about making it simple.” The pair didn’t have very long to work together either; Fremar reports getting the assignment five days before showtime.
Before we continue, let’s take a time out. For a quick reference of what Perry’s typically worn on the carpet, take a peek at the Britney-inspired denim look she wore to the VMAs in 2014.
Or the wing-finished Armani Prive gown she picked for the 2011 Grammys.
Comparatively, last night’s Prada is the epitome of demure, plunging neckline and all.
“She wanted to stay true to being a musician but be appropriate for the event. It’s a very fine line because you don’t want to be somebody that you’re not. But then you also want to be respectful, because you’re there honoring people’s work,” she explained, pointing to the times that Perry’s dressed perfectly in theme, à la the music-covered Valentino gown she picked for the Grammys in 2014. “She’s so used to making costumes, and she really knows her body. It was a really fun collaboration.”
Professionally, Fremar’s job is to work with what a star likes, while also nudging them to take a step outside of their comfort zones. While in Perry’s case that might mean taking things down a notch to embrace a streamlined look, other clients can see an opposite push. For instance, when Fremar started working with Reese Witherspoon she helped the actress move beyond vintage dresses and bright colors.
“She doesn’t like to wear black, though I get her to wear black sometimes,” she told the New York Times. The actress’ big Oscar moment—in 2005 for Walk the Line—happened about five years before the two joined forces, but it was one that the stylist referred to when she laid out a plan for Witherspoon’s style evolution, explaining that while the actress “loves vintage clothing and references,” it wasn’t a direction they were going. Lo and behold, when was the last time you saw the A-lister in a retro look?
Fremar tells a similar style of client Charlize Theron, a woman she’s credited with helping introduce to the best-dressed list. Like Witherspoon, the actress needed just a bit of a push to get into one of her most stunning recent looks, a divine Dior couture dress worn at the 2014 Oscars. “Charlize has worn white and pink, so I thought it would be incredible to do a black dress,” she’s explained. “She wasn’t sure but said, ‘I trust you.'” And there’s her styling M.O. in a nutshell.
Beyond switching up the style of an established star, Fremar can also make a red-carpet ingenue happen. When Nicola Peltz burst onto the style scene with Transformers: Age of Extinction, she could have easily been ignored by the fashion flock. Instead, thanks to Fremar’s deft picks, she was widely celebrated.
So what does this mean for Perry? Rest assured that the singer won’t transform into a copy of anyone else, though we do predict more of the solids and simple cuts that make for timeless looks. Fremar will be working her signature magic, finessing what the star is drawn to naturally, challenging it every so slightly, and helping to make sure everything is still essentially her.
“She’s very aware of her brand and she’s wicked smart. She comes off as being light and fun, but she’s also very impressive. Everything is really thought-through.”
