Meghan Trainor Just Dropped a Sassy New Single That's Perfect for Your Girls' Night Out
Meghan Trainor is on a roll lately. Hair makeover? Check—and we’re loving the reddish-brown. Grammy? Check—she picked it up in February for best new artist. Sophomore album? In the works—due out May 13.
But to tide us over until Thank You comes out, Trainor’s generously rocked our weekends with a feisty new single, aptly titled “No,” that’s pretty reminiscent of when that guy at the bar keeps trying to chat you up, oblivious to the fact that you just want to keep it chill with your girls. Check it out here, Spotify users (no video yet, sadly!).
The song is a massive departure from her doo-wop-infused debut album, Title, and that’s exactly the point: Like her new look, the track showcases a more grown-up, in-charge Trainor. And even though the song is about telling a pushy guy to back off, Billboard points out that, ironically, it was born out of a man telling her “no”—just not in that kind of way.
“I sat down with [Epic CEO] L.A. Reid and said, ‘I have my album done,’ and he said, ‘No, you don’t, you don’t have a single,'” Trainor tells Billboard. “And I looked at him like he was crazy—I was pissed off. And I said, ‘All right Mr. Reid, I’m going to write you a single right now. And I went to the studio and said, ‘I need a big, angry anthem,’ and it turned into an awesome woman anthem about being independent.”
Just like with “No,” the singer said the rest of the tracks on her new album are going to be more edgy and modern but still carry through themes of empowerment and self-love—which is something we can definitely get behind. But until that day in May when we’re lucky enough to get the album, this track’s definitely going on our girls’ night out playlist.
