Review: Dear Santa – X-mas Special by Girls’ Generation-TTS
TaeTiSeo’s return to the airwaves with a collection of festive songs, is a very curious affair indeed.
Why didn’t the Girls’ Generation subgroup release a studio offering that’s “year-long” instead of one that is strictly “year-end”? Good luck spinning those holiday tunes in March!
One theory is that S.M. is banking on Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun to dominate the ever-elusive US market. Nothing like a good ol’ fuzzy Christmas track to warm those cold Grinch-like American hearts, right?
To that extent, lead single Dear Santa – which comes complete with a lyrically-distinct English version – might just put TaeTiSeo on the radar. The song is a polished winter-themed number that’s sure to enjoy heavy rotation at the malls during this busy shopping season.
The record’s titular track starts off unassumingly like a sappy ballad before turning into a full-blown merry-making twinkling uptempo number – complete with joyous bells and oh-so-adorable lyrics. Comparisons to Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas are rife. In other words, the song becoming a Yuletide classic is not an unlikely prospect.
Unfortunately, the rest of the mini album is inundated by forgettable numbers. The disco-fied R&B melodies of I Like The Way is an awkward addition next to the album’s wintry template.
As for Winter Story, the track has just the right acoustics sensibilities to make it to a compilation by The Hotel Cafe. But on Merry Christmas and First Snow, the girls dish up commonplace tunes that – if not for this season of love and joy – would have prompted far harsher observations.
