Spring's Biggest Shoe Trend Is Inspired by—Wait for It—Your Grandmother's Closet

No surprise, but we’re so excited about spring and the warm-weather dressing it entails. Sunny days can usher in some trends that aren’t exactly work-appropriate, but one of our favorites is so prim and polished that it’s basically calling out for the Monday to Friday rotation. The cap-toe slingback, inspired by a retro look that your grandmother probably had in her closet, has been gaining sartorial steam since being the only shoe sent down Chanel’s fall 2015 runway. It started popping up in street style shots immediately after and hasn’t stopped since, with new iterations included in the house’s current collection. Now, with bare-leg season right around the corner, we’re predicting an even bigger showing this season.

Why all the love? The slingback’s versatility means it can be worn for work or play in equal measure; pair with trousers or a classic pencil skirt for the office, and style them with favorite denim or sundresses for the weekend. Think of them as you would ballet flats, subbing a pair in for any outfit you’d normally finish with skimmers. It creates the same French-girl look, but with an even more now vibe, a funny fact when you consider that the original was created by Coco herself back in 1957 (the beige and black combo was designed to both lengthen the leg and shorten the foot).

See street style inspiration below, then find options to snag now.
