Primary Wave Entertainment is teaming up with DJ Steve Angello on a scripted series set in the word of electronic dance music, Variety has learned exclusively.

Angello, the frontman of Swedish House Mafia, will serve as an executive producer on the project in development, along with his producing partner and wife Isabel Adrian of LaLa Studios, music video director Gregory Alosio, Cult Collective’s Pia Lindstrom, Martin Management’s Sharlene Martin-Ludwig and Primary Wave Entertainment senior manager Ben Press.

The potential series will be about DJ culture in the fast-paced, larger-than-life world of electronic dance music (EDM), also known as house music. The show has plans to prominently feature Angello’s music.

No showrunner is attached yet, though Primary Wave is actively meeting with candidates. Efforts on securing a showrunner are being led by Press and Primary Wave’s David Guillod and Mark Burg. Though the project is in the early stages, insiders say that a couple of venues have expressed interest.

In addition to developing the series, Primary Wave will produce a feature film, based on Adrian’s novel Sex, Drugs And The DJ, a dramatisation of an Angello-type DJ from humble beginnings who becomes a global sensation, which is loosely inspired by the couple’s life together.

The flick will also heavily feature Angello’s EDM tracks.

Primary Wave’s TV project marks the second EDM-based show put into development with Angello involved. In September, the CW bought a script for The Drop with the famous DJ attached as executive music producer. With the mainstream rise of house music, many venues, especially young-skewing networks, have expressed interest in finding the right EDM-themed series for their programming slates in recent years.

Both the TV and film project mark a continuation in original development efforts for Primary Wave Entertainment, which formed early last year, a result of the merger between Evolution Entertainment, Intellectual Artists Group and Primary Wave Music.

The company has worked on setting up projects including the Focus Features spy thriller Coldest City, starring Charlize Theron; Cinelou Films’ Henry Joseph Church, starring Eddie Murphy; Amazon’s Bosch; and BET’s Gabrielle Union-starrer Being Mary Jane. – Reuters
