We've been treated to a series of images from the upcoming Logan, also known as the third installment in the Wolverine stand-alone movies, a spin-off from the X-Men series. The latest photo, shared by director James Mangold, reveals Hugh Jackman (above), looking a bit weathered.
The movie takes inspiration from Old Man Logan, an eight-issue comic book series that was published in 2008 and 2009. Written by Mark Millar (Kick-ass), the series took place in an alternate universe in which heroes were mostly wiped out of existence and survivors took refuge in hiding. Wolverine, now known only as Logan, is a married man with two children who refuses to use his superpowers. He accepts a dangerous job only because he needs the money for his family.
Logan is set one year after the concluding events in X-Men: Days of Future Past (circa 2024) and finds the aged character declining to use his claws as a superhero. His superpowers are fading. But a villainous organization wants to turn the world's young mutants into weapons, prompting Logan to once again become Wolverine.
The first teaser trailer expertly teases it all. Check it out below.
We love its gritty Western-showdown vibe, complete with the soft, depressing lyrics of Johnny Cash's masterful rendition of "Hurt." This is a Wolverine who's not in good shape. Other mutants have passed on, and it's clear he's looking to hang up the claws for good… that is, until one last mission lands on his doorstep.
Logan is set to open in theaters on March 3, 2017.
