Where Does Britney Spears' Carpool Karaoke Rank Among Other Pop Divas?

By / Published on Saturday, 27 Aug 2016 15:42 PM / No Comments / 99 views

Britney Spears got real with James Corden in her edition of Carpool Karaoke, but watching the pop princess half-lip sync, half-sing her way through the Late Late Show segment made us wonder how she’d stack up against the rest of the divas who have sat in Corden’s passenger seat.

So we decided to rank them, naturally!

First, we had to disqualify Demi Lovato because her Carpool Karaoke was with tourmate Nick Jonas, making it a totally different dynamic than a solo outing. We also took Gwen Stefani out of the ranking for the same reason, because although her segment was ostensibly hers alone, George Clooney and Julia Roberts took up a lot of prime airtime. Don’t you hate when Oscar winners crash your karaoke sesh?

Here’s our current pop diva Carpool Karaoke ranking:

5 Things You Missed From Britney Spears’ Carpool Karaoke

9. Iggy Azalea

Like Britney, she seems kind of hesitant but with fewer beloved chart-toppers to arm dance to so there’s no nostalgia factor to reel us in. Plus, there’s a lot of talk about her now-canceled wedding, which is sad to rewatch. Hope you’re doing ok, Iggy!

8. Carrie Underwood

This was still the Carpool Karaoke early days, so it’s not quite as charming as some of the later editions. Carrie’s got some pipes, y’all, but she and James go boot shopping for like three full minutes. More singing, please!

7. Selena Gomez

The youngest diva on the list, Sel’s library of music just isn’t as expansive as the others. But anyone who is game enough to belt out one of their hits while riding on a FREAKING ROLLER COASTER and manages to look fierce AF throughout scores major points in our book.

6. Britney Spears

We’re not sure why Brit mouthed her way through so much of this, especially because, when she did sing, she sounded good! She seemed nervous, hesitant to get as silly with James as the segment really requires. There were a few moments of playfulness—the revelation of her naughty hotel aliases and a demonstration of her patented “mmm-yeah”—but they only left us saying “Gimme more.”

5. Sia

Yes, she’s wearing her giant wig. But it’s a rare peek into the life one of pop music’s most secretive stars. Come for her belting her face off to “Chandelier” and “Alive,” stay for her views on aliens and her ability to balance a dozen eggs on her hands. Seriously.

4. Mariah Carey

Queen Mariah will always rank high. That this segment opens with one of the greatest songs of all time (“Always Be My Baby,” duh) and there’s some fantastic banter between the elusive chanteuse and the talk show host. But it was the very first CK segment ever, so there are still a few kinks to be worked out. It’s fantastic, and we’re hoping for a volume two (maybe around the time Mariah’s World premieres? Just sayin’).

3. Jennifer Lopez

This is Carpool Karaoke Hall of Fame material, and not even because of this legendary text from Leonardo DiCaprio: “You mean tonight, Boo Boo? Club-wise?”

2. Jennifer Hudson

This segment works best when people are game, and Jennifer Hudson was TOTALLY down for anything. She sings James’ drive-thru order, takes selfies with her Walk of Fame star, waves at buses—it’s incredible. Plus, could you imagine looking over in traffic and seeing JHud belting “And I Am Telling You” next to you at a stoplight?

1. Adele

Between her hilarious stories, her jaw-dropping voice, and her badass performance of Nicki Minaj‘s verse from “Monster,” Adele’s Carpool Karaoke segment is the gold standard. Adele FTW.
